Companies engaged in
the manufacture of technical instruments for measuring, control,
diagnosis and analysis make up a sizable industry group in Puerto
Rico, making the Island one of the largest high-tech industrial
development centers in the USA with almost 15,000 workers employed
in this area. The majority of the instrument manufacturing operations
in Puerto Rico are subsidiaries of U.S. mainland firms, many of
which are Fortune 500 companies, and outbound shipments in this
area grew 19.1% between 1991 and 2000, reaching $1.8 billion. In
fact, 7.6% of all medical devices and equipment manufactured in
the U.S. are shipped from Puerto Rico.
PRIDCO’s Office of Science and Technology is committed to
